Water Resources in Kansas:
Use and Control, 1541-1977
by Keith S. Krause
back
Water is the lifeblood of Kansas, and the wise use of this
resource “seems to be taking root in the thinking and
actions of Kansans.” Coronado, in 1541, made the first
written record of the water resources of the Great
Plains, calling the area “the best I’ve seen for producing
all the products of Spain … the land itself being very fat
and black and being well watered by rivulets and springs
and rivers…” Krause looks at the history of Kansas
water resources and how water, or the lack thereof,
relates to the development of rural and urban areas of
the state.
